In 1992, Maureen was permanently paralyzed by a fall in Rockland, Maine while her husband Dan Tucker was racing J/24 sailboats. Maureen was supposed to be racing as well, but her team cancelled at the last moment. While walking her bicycle to the ferry, she tripped and fell over the edge of a seawall, landing 13 feet below in the sand at low tide. Before her injury, Maureen was a casual racing sailor. Sail! Challenge! Inspireis what most Paralympic sailors do. SCI also stands for Spinal Cord Injury, which is the accidental cause of Maureen McKinnon-Tucker's paralysis and disability. Sailing liberates everyone, particularly the disabled. The boat equalizes. It empowers. Challenge -the challenge of reaching for a goal. Competition at the elite world level is a tremendous challenge. Maureen challenges herself to be the best sailor she can be every time she's on the boat. She also challenges the perceptions of some people who don't realize what a person with a disability can do. Additionally, she challenges other disabled people to move beyond their comfort zone, challenging them to do more for themselves. Inspire -Maureen doesn't see herself as an inspiration, but so many people do. She is a peer visitor and mentor for newly injured people, she founded and runs the "Gimpy Girls Brunch Club" a social networking group for women with disabilities and she often speaks, testifies and advocates for stem cell reaserch. Maureen hopes to inspire people to strive to acheive a challenge greater than themselves or for themselves. Sail, Challenge, Inspire Inc. is a Massachusetts non-profit corporation which has applied to the IRS for charitable status under Section 501(c)3. |
